Small forward Josh Green was seemingly hobbled by a foot complaint but still kicked three goals from limited ball as the Bombers held on 10.9 (69) to 9.10 (64).

Nineteen-year-old tall midfielder Jordan Ridley, who played three matches this year, was the Bombers' best, clean by foot and finished with 24 disposals and seven marks.

Zac Smith bounced back from last week's below-par performance with 20 disposals, while wingman Jordan Cunico (20 disposals, one goal) was busy.

Jamaine Jones (13 disposals, 1.2), Lachie Fogarty (16 disposals, one goal) and Lincoln McCarthy (eight disposals, 1.2) were lively in attack but failed to capitalise on a positive inside 50 count (61-52).

In an attempt to chase the game, coach Shane O'Bree threw the magnets around, sending Zach Guthrie (1.2) forward and Ryan Gardner into defence.

Charlie Constable (hamstring/glute) was a late withdrawal, while Esava Ratugolea didn't play and looks set for more work on the broken ankle he suffered in round 10.

The Hawks controlled the match against Geelong at Stannards Stadium (102-65 marks), with the game in safe keeping by three-quarter time.

Miles and Brand impressed, while James Cousins (27 disposals) and Brendan Whitecross (14 disposals, two goals) gave onlooker Alastair Clarkson something to consider.

Jono O'Rourke (11 disposals) was used on and off the bench, Tim O'Brien played in defence, while rookie Oliver Hanrahan excited with three majors.

David Mirra and Taylor Duryea appear the most likely to replace Ben Stratton for Hawthorn's AFL semi-final with Melbourne, both late withdrawals from the 29-point win.

Splitting his time between half-back and the wing, Ellis' class shone through in patches, with good choices and accurate disposal.
