MELBOURNE has made its eighth list change of the 2018 off-season, delisting young defender Dion Johnstone.

Johnstone, selected with pick No.64 in the 2016 NAB AFL Draft, did not play a game with the Demons in his time at the club.

The 20-year-old was initially drafted as a forward, with his pressure and tackling ability a major strength.

But the Demons decided to try to turn him into a defender and he worked closely with mentor Neville Jetta on his defensive craft this season.

Demons football manager Josh Mahoney said it was a tough call on Johnstone.

"These decisions are obviously difficult, given the competition for spots on our list," he told the club's website.

"On behalf of everyone at the club, we would like to thank all players for their hard work and commitment during their time with us."

Johnstone's departure comes after the Demons let go Cameron Pedersen, Tomas Bugg, Pat McKenna, and ruck duo Mitch King and Lochie Filipovic.

Veteran defender Bernie Vince retired after 229 games for Melbourne and Adelaide, while youngster Harley Balic also hung up his boots in the middle of the year.
