Kangaroo off to Swans, but no swap for Newman

NORTH Melbourne midfielder Ryan Clarke has moved to Sydney in exchange for pick No.61.

The out-of-contract Clarke met with the Swans recently after North told him it could not give him an answer on his future until the end of the NAB AFL Trade Period.

It had seemed Clarke could get to Sydney in a straight swap for Swans defender Nick Newman, who toured the Roos' Arden St headquarters two weeks ago.

However, the Swans will pass on pick No.61 to North, after acquiring that selection from Geelong in a trade for Gary Rohan on Wednesday morning.

It's understood the Kangaroos will no longer pursue a deal for Newman given they have snared Port Adelaide defender Jasper Pittard as part of the Jared Polec deal that was finalised on Wednesday morning.

North's acquisition of Pittard also means it's unlikely to trade for Greater Western Sydney defender Jeremy Finlayson.

The Swans do not have a third-round selection this year after trading theirs to Collingwood last year, so their fourth-round pick, No.69, is likely to go to North for Clarke.

Clarke, 21, played a career-high 19 games for the Kangaroos in 2018, but spent a lot of time in a new role across half-back.

The Swans plan on using him in his more familiar role as a hard-running on-baller, hoping that he can help fill the hole left by Dan Hannebery's looming departure to St Kilda.

North is also expected to finalise trades for contracted Demon Dom Tyson and out-of-contract Suns midfielder Aaron Hall soon.

The Tyson deal should be announced on Thursday, with Melbourne set to receive Roos ruckman Braydon Preuss in a straight swap.

Hall is expected to get to North in an exchange of draft picks, but the trade might not be finalised until Friday.

Taken at pick No.31 in 2015's NAB AFL Draft, Clarke played 40 games for North and was a NAB AFL Rising Star nominee in 2016.

In 2018, he averaged 19.7 possessions and 3.1 rebound 50s a game.
