Why Papley wants out

Tom Papley's wish to move back to Victoria stems from a desire to be closer to his family, News Corp reported on Friday.

The Sydney goalsneak is originally from Bunyip, a small town in Gippsland to the east of Melbourne, and a family health concern is a driving force behind leaving the Swans.

Papley has been closely linked to Carlton in particular over the past few months, is still good mates with former Swans Nic Newman (now at the Blues) and Alex Johnson (VFL affiliate Northern Blues) but is contracted until the end of 2023.

The 23-year-old's girlfriend is also another pull back home as she currently lives in Melbourne.

News Corp's report said Papley was unhappy and felt isolated living in the city of Sydney, but had no issues with the club itself.

Saint Butler?

The Age is reporting St Kilda has expressed interest in out-of-contract Tiger Dan Butler.

Carlton is also keen on the classy small forward, who was part of Richmond's premiership side in 2017 but fell out of favour halfway through this year, overtaken by Shai Bolton.

Butler was part of the Tigers' VFL flag this year.

Who wants pick No.6?

St Kilda is preparing itself to trade its first-round selection, pick No.6, as it chases a number of players including Fremantle winger Bradley Hill.

AFL.com.au reported the club's quest to land Hill and Port Adelaide ruckman Paddy Ryder (who has officially requested a trade to Moorabbin) has seen it concede pick No.6 will most likely be on its way out the door.

The Saints have also been linked to another two Power players in Dougal Howard and Sam Gray, as well as Sydney's Zak Jones.

Having already traded away its second- and third-round picks last year in deals involving Dan Hannebery and North Melbourne respectively, it could leave the Saints without a selection until pick No.56.

"We plan on being reasonably active in the Trade Period – within reason," St Kilda list manager James Gallagher told AFL.com.au on Friday.

"It would be nice to hold on to that early pick No.6, but we're also pragmatic. If we want to be a club that brings in some talented players, then we need to be open-minded with that.

"There's nothing concrete with other clubs just yet, but I think we're probably aware that we may not have that pick on draft night."

Crouch and the Crows

After winning Adelaide's best and fairest, Brad Crouch has told News Corp he is hoping to stay at the club in 2020, despite strong reports he is on the move.

The midfielder has been heavily linked to Gold Coast in particular.

"I'm just at that stage at the moment where I'm really hoping to, I love it in Adelaide here," Crouch said.

"But also it's just so tough with the footy club because we don’t have a coach ... and they're pretty busy getting a coach and sorting out the review as well, so hopefully I can get something done soon.

"The place is going to change a lot because there will be so many new faces, with a lot of players leaving and a lot of changes in our coaching as well.

"I think that new freshen-up will give us a good look going into the pre-season. From us players, we know there’s going to be change and that excites us."

Former coach Don Pyke, who stepped aside several weeks ago, attended the best and fairest after what was said to be a last-minute change of heart.
