GREATER Western Sydney has secured the services of ruckman Sam Jacobs after agreeing to a trade with Adelaide.

The Giants traded the future fourth-round pick (tied to Melbourne) they received from Hawthorn in the Jonathon Patton trade.

Jacobs could have signed as an unrestricted free agent, but the clubs agreed to a trade so the Giants' compensation pick for losing Adam Tomlinson to Melbourne wouldn't be diluted.

Jacobs played 201 games for Adelaide (184) and Carlton (17) across the past 11 season, but lost the No.1 ruck position to Reilly O'Brien at the Crows this year.

He told Telstra AFL Trade Radio that although he leaves the Crows 'with a heavy heart', he's rapt to have signed a two-year deal with a premiership contender.

"The Giants have some terrific players, but they've also got guys who play some really important roles for them as well, so I think the balance is really strong," he said.

"Hopefully I can be one of those role players and give them a good look at it through the midfield.

"There's absolutely no reason why, especially in my time up there, that the Giants are going to go anywhere.

"You look at their Grand Final side and throw Callan Ward and Stephen Coniglio into that, it's going to be a pretty exciting 2020.

"Unfortunately, I've lost a Grand Final myself, so I'm really motivated to help out the younger guys with my leadership."

Giants list manager Jason McCartney was thrilled to secure Jacobs.

"Quality ruckmen are a highly sought after commodity across the competition and we’re delighted Sam sought a move to the Giants," McCartney said.

"We were keen to bolster our ruck stocks following the retirement of Dawson Simpson and we believe Sam has plenty of good football left in him.

"Not only has Sam forged a tremendous career across two clubs, he’s a quality person and the ideal fit for our club as we strive to continue to consistently play finals football."

Crows list manager Justin Reid wished Jacobs all the best at his new club.

"We wish Sam, Izzy and young Imogen all the very best for the future."
