Team of the week

DROPPED to the WAFL twice last season, Sharrod Wellingham looked a long way away from being a key player in an Eagles' resurgence.

But an inspired move to half-back could have been the tweak that reinvigorates the Collingwood premiership player and drives him at his second football home.

Wellingham is one of three Eagles in the round six Team of the Week, brought to you by Accor Hotels, joined by Mark LeCras and Luke Shuey, but there could have been more.

Matt Priddis, Elliot Yeo and Chris Masten can all consider themselves unlucky after helping the Eagles to a shock upset against Port Adelaide and a 4-2 record after six matches.

Backs

JED BEWS (Geelong) - Matched up on in-form Collingwood forward Jamie Elliott, who went goalless for the second time this season. Bews (13 possessions and two tackles) had modest stats but his job was to stop Elliott, which the 21-year-old did superbly.

ALIPATE CARLILE (Port Adelaide) - Overdue for selection here after a strong run of form. Carlile, who gets the nod after keeping Josh Kennedy to one goal, has conceded only five goals in six games.

TOM McDONALD (Melbourne) - Kept Lance Franklin goalless for the first time since round four, 2014, doing all he could for the defeated Demons. Another tall defender who has hardly put a foot wrong this season.

Half-backs

COREY ENRIGHT (Geelong) - A massive game from the veteran Cat in a rock-solid back six that kept the Pies to eight goals. Finished with 29 possessions, 12 marks and 11 tackles.

SAM FISHER (St Kilda) - Incredible to think that Fisher considered retirement last year given his form in 2015. Selected here as a key defender, he had 26 possessions and 13 marks against the Bulldogs.

SHARROD WELLINGHAM (West Coast) - Seems to have found a spot he can make his own in the Eagles’ line-up after excelling across half-back. Worked hard for teammates and was clean with his ball use, finishing with 22 possessions and 11 marks.

Centres

MITCH DUNCAN (Geelong) - Has made this spot his own the past fortnight with 38 possessions and 12 marks against Collingwood. Got inside to win clearances and is stepping up in a big way for the Cats.

DAVID ARMITAGE (St Kilda) - In the best form of his 113-game career, Armitage racked up a career-high 45 possessions against the Bulldogs. Selected for the third time this season, he also had eight clearances and was a star in the Saints' fightback.

JACK STEVEN (St Kilda) - Produced an outstanding second half alongside Armitage to drag the Saints back into the game, winning 19 of his 32 possessions after half-time. Had an equal team-high seven inside 50s.

Half-forwards

JACK BILLINGS (St Kilda) - The second-year forward was the game-breaker against the Bulldogs on Saturday, kicking four goals, including three in the final term. Took the responsibility streaming inside 50 to ice the game himself.

JEREMY CAMERON (Greater Western Sydney) - Kicked the biggest bag of the round, with 7.0 against Hawthorn. His judgement and courage in marking contests made him near unstoppable.

ROBBIE GRAY (Port Adelaide) - Best on ground in a losing cause, Gray roamed through the midfield and across half-forward and threatened to take the game from West Coast singlehandedly. The All Australian had 25 possessions, seven clearances and three goals.

Forwards

EDDIE BETTS (Adelaide) - Now second in the Coleman Medal race with 20 goals, Betts beat his man on the lead, in one-on-one contests and in packs to get his bag. With 5.0, he was deadly accurate kicking across his body.

MATTHEW PAVLICH (Fremantle) - Not many key forwards have had the better of Michael Hurley this season, but that's what Pavlich did in round six. Booted four goals against one of the AFL's best backlines this season and led from the front.

LINDSAY THOMAS (North Melbourne) - At his opportunistic best, Thomas kicked five goals against the Tigers, loitering around Robin Nahas on the boundary to receive a handball and snap magnificently for his last.

Followers

STEFAN MARTIN (Brisbane Lions) - In a tough week for ruckmen, Martin was the pick with his 38 hit-outs, five clearances and 19 possessions against Carlton opponent Cameron Wood. Got on top through his agility.

LUKE SHUEY (West Coast) - The midfielder was exceptional in the big moments on Sunday, icing the game with his second goal. Final tally of 23 possessions and three clearances doesn't look remarkable, but he was the Eagles' best when it counted.

JOSH KENNEDY (Sydney Swans) - A typical game from the big-bodied midfielder, racking up 31 possessions (17 contested), seven clearances and eight tackles. Bullocked his way to two goals in a best-on-ground display.

Interchange

MARK BLICAVS (Geelong) - Produced his best match for Geelong, running with star midfielder Scott Pendlebury and limiting his damage. Also moved into the ruck to support Rhys Stanley and racked up 27 possessions and six tackles.

MARK LeCRAS (West Coast) - Spent more time in the midfield against the Power and was polished as you'd expect with 28 possessions and six clearances. The Eagles might have missed his clinical finishing forward at times but his work up the ground was one of the main reasons they won a thriller.

LACHIE NEALE (Fremantle) - A crucial cog in a fearsome midfield, Neale had seven clearances and seven inside 50s (both equal team highs) in his 33 possessions. Earns selection for the second time this season and has been a consistent performer for the Dockers.

CALLAN WARD (Greater Western Sydney) - Just pips teammate Tom Scully for this spot, with the Giants unlucky not to have more players here after beating the reigning premier. Had 31 possessions in a hard-nosed performance, with seven tackles and seven inside 50s.
