The AFL wishes to advise the Match Review Panel has reviewed the weekend's matches. The following charges were laid:

Charges laid:
Scott Thompson, North Melbourne,
has been charged with a level one striking offence (80 demerit points) for striking Matt Rosa, West Coast, during the second quarter of the Round Eight match between North Melbourne and West Coast, played at Patersons Stadium on Friday May 17, 2013.

In summary, he can accept a reprimand and 60 demerit points towards his future record with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from West Coast, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a level one offence, drawing 80 demerit points and a reprimand. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 60 points towards his future record.

Daniel Merrett, Brisbane Lions, has been charged with a level three engaging in rough conduct offence (325 demerit points, three-match sanction) for engaging in rough conduct against Michael Hurley, Essendon, during the first quarter of the Round Eight match between the Brisbane Lions and Essendon, played at Etihad Stadium on Saturday May 18, 2013.

In summary, due to his previous poor record, his three-match sanction must remain at three matches, even with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Essendon Football Club, the incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), high impact (three points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a level three offence, drawing 325 demerit points and a three-match sanction. He has an existing bad record of 93.75 demerit points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 418.75 points and a four-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 314.06 points and a three-match sanction.

Justin Clarke, Brisbane Lions, has been charged with a level two charging offence (225 demerit points, two match sanction) for charging Elliott Kavanagh, Essendon, during the first quarter of the Round Eight match between the Brisbane Lions and Essendon, played at Etihad Stadium on Saturday May 18, 2013.

In summary, he can accept a one-match sanction with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Essendon Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), medium impact (two points) and body contact (one point). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a level two offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-match sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 168.75 demerit points and a one-match sanction.

Simon Black, Brisbane Lions, has been charged with a first offence for making negligent contact with an umpire ($1200 sanction) for making negligent contact with umpire Stuart Wenn during the first quarter of the Round Eight match between the Brisbane Lions and Essendon, played at Etihad Stadium on Saturday May 18, 2013.

In summary, he can accept a $900 sanction with an early plea.

Alex Rance, Richmond, has been charged with a third offence for engaging in a melee ($400 sanction) for engaging in a melee at half time of the Round Eight match between Richmond and Melbourne, played at the MCG on Sunday May 19, 2013.

In summary, he can accept a $3000 sanction with an early plea.

Other incidents assessed:
The match day report against Collingwood's Darren Jolly for engaging in rough conduct against Geelong's Matthew Stokes was assessed. The panel said Geelong's James Podsiadly had the ball and had handballed in the direction of his teammate Stokes. Jolly is coming to the contest and was preparing to tackle, with his arms out in front of him, until the ball misses Stokes and does not go to the Geelong player. At the last moment, Jolly turns and braces for contact, when he can no longer tackle. After speaking to the umpire who laid the report, viewing all available footage and receiving a medical report from the Geelong Cats' Football Club, it was the view of the panel the majority of the contact was to Stokes' body and the force in the high contact was below that required to constitute a reportable offence . No further action was taken.

Contact between the Western Bulldogs' Liam Picken and Gold Coast's Jesse Lonergan from the second quarter of Saturday's match was assessed. Lonergan gathers the ball and handballs to teammate Campbell Brown as he is confronted by Picken. Picken braces for contact after the Suns' player disposes fo the ball and bumps Lonergan to the chest. After viewing all available footage and receiving a medical report from the Gold Coast Suns, it was the view of the panel there was no forceful high contact. No further action was taken.

Contact between the Sydney Swans' Ted Richards and Fremantle's Michael Walters from the second quarter of Saturday's match was assessed. The ball was loose with Richards and Walters coming to the contest from opposite directions. Richards dives at the ball with his arms out as Walters reaches down and ducks into the contest. It was the view of the panel that Richards had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball and no further action was taken.

Contact between Port Adelaide's Hamish Hartlett and Carlton's Marc Murphy from the third quarter of Sunday's match was assessed. A free kick was paid at the time for the prohibited contact to the Carlton player. After viewing all available footage and receiving a medical report from the Carlton Football Club, it was the view of the panel the force used was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

Contact between Melbourne's Jack Trengove and Richmond's Jack Riewoldt from the fourth quarter of Sunday's match was assessed. The ball was loose and Riewoldt was bending down to pick it up. As the Richmond player comes to the ball, Trengove comes from the side and slows as he approaches his opponent, before making contact with a  bump. After viewing all available footage and receiving a medical report from the Richmond Football Club, it was the view of the panel the force used was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.
