GARRY Lyon will again be calling football on television, after quitting Channel Nine for Fox Footy.

The Melbourne champion hasn't provided expert commentary on television since Nine lost the rights at the end of 2005.

He's also expected to appear on the 24-hour footy channel's feature and panel programming.

"I can’t wait to kick off the 2018 season with my new Fox Footy teammates. I’m looking forward to debating all the latest footy news with Dermott (Brereton) and Jason (Dunstall) and getting a first-hand look at the famous Fox Footy Lab," Lyon said in a statement.

Fox had already announced recently retired St Kilda great Nick Riewoldt will join the network next year.

Lyon played 226 games for Melbourne. He took a year off from media work in 2016 to deal with personal issues.

He did not return to The Footy Show, but rejoined Monday night program Footy Classified this year.

He has also returned as host of AFL.com.au's Access All Areas and sports radio station SEN's much-hyped breakfast show.

"Garry says it how it is. With over 30 years' experience playing and commentating AFL, he has a deep understanding of the game that few have," Fox Sports chief executive Patrick Delaney said.

"One of the sharpest AFL minds in the business, Garry has an innate sense of news, what shapes the game, and a passion for sharing his observations and love of the game and it’s why we wanted him at Fox Footy."
