PORT Adelaide is aiming to cash in on this week's blistering forecast, using the extreme heat to quickly improve fitness and skill levels under stress.

As the mercury climbed towards 45 degrees on Wednesday morning, Power players trained as usual on Alberton Oval.

With high performance manager Darren Burgess a public supporter of heat training, defender Jackson Trengove said the players would push on.

"We know the conditions are not ideal; it's super hot for a professional athlete to run around in but we've still got to get the job done and we feel this week's a good week for us to advance on our fitness and advance on our ball skills.

"It's a fair focus for Burgo and the coaching staff with Kenny (Ken Hinkley) to get a lot out of this week."

The 23-year-old also said the players' recovery during Adelaide's heat wave would remain the same.

While they will avoid Thursday's expected maximum temperature of 46 degrees with a day off, if Friday reaches its predicted top of 40 it will mean an entire week of training in 40-plus heat.

With ice baths and vests and several beaches within a short drive of the club, Trengove said players knew how to recover.

"We've got the protocol of ice baths and beach and all the recovery tools are in place so nothing really changes," he said.

"You’ve got to recover really well after every session because you're busting your guts every time you're going out there whether it's 20 degrees or it's 45."

Almost a year since the Power began their remarkable 2013 campaign, Trengove said the increase in the quality of training was easily noticeable at Alberton.

The Power enjoyed a hugely successful season, turning a 14th-placed finish in 2012 into a semi-final berth and fifth place last year.

While the group still had some way to go, Trengove said they now trained with purpose and were making ground in their hope of becoming a League leader.

"It'd be silly to sit up here and say I can't notice any difference," he said.

"The way the boys are training now it's at a better level - we're probably not elite yet, otherwise we'd be winning every week, but we're starting to climb towards there.

"We're training with a purpose now; we're not just going out there and running through the motions. We're really going out there to achieve something from every session.

"[That's] probably the big thing that Kenny, the coaching staff and the group has bought into."
