If the towering speccie is Australian football's hole-in-one, Collingwood's Jamie Elliott is anything but a nearly man. Elliott is the reigning mark of the year winner and this season has already hauled in several brilliant grabs. But against West Coast on Saturday he flew for this nosebleed-inducing effort that almost cemented him a place among the best of all time. Almost.

There's a shade of Shaun Smith, Gary Moorcroft and perhaps even Gary Ablett snr in his climb against the Cats in round two. More familiar to football mortals is the way the ball pings from his chest before Bewick tumbles to earth – guaranteeing this nearly-moment is one you're unlikely to recap to your grandkids.
