JAKE Carlisle's standout start to the season has been rewarded with a new two-year contract with the Bombers.

The promising Essendon defender, who has enjoyed a sterling opening to the season, has re-committed to the club until the end of the 2015.

"I couldn't be happier, it's a privilege to play for a club with such a rich and proud history, and it means a lot to recommit to the club that gave me the opportunity and drafted me," Carlisle told essendonfc.com.au.

Carlisle was drafted by the Bombers with pick 24 at the 2009 NAB AFL Draft and since then has shown why the Bombers were so pleased to recruit him.

This season he has become Essendon's first-choice defender, stopping the likes of Adelaide forward Taylor Walker, Melbourne's Mitch Clark, Fremantle captain Matthew Pavlich, and St Kilda star Nick Riewoldt.

The 21-year-old had a breakout season last year, playing 18 games before an ankle injury ended his campaign.

He faces another tough challenge on Thursday against Collingwood superstar Travis Cloke.
