AFL Commission Chairman Mike Fitzpatrick on Monday said he had rung newly-elected Essendon Football Club chairman Paul Little to congratulate him on his appointment.

Fitzpatrick said Essendon would benefit greatly from Little's experience and he also wished to pay tribute to retiring chairman David Evans.

"I contacted Paul Little today to welcome him formally to the role at Essendon on behalf of the AFL Commission," Fitzpatrick said.

"Essendon is fortunate to have a man of Paul's great standing and long experience in the business community to lead the club at this time.

"I also wish to personally acknowledge David Evans for his work - David is a capable, courageous and honourable man who has worked incredibly hard to achieve the best outcome for his club.

"Without David's brave guidance in a very challenging period for his club, this time could have been much more difficult for all parties and it is regrettable the public nature of this matter has impacted on him and we wish him well."
