WHEN choosing your NAB AFL Fantasy defence in 2014, you could do worse than look first to Hawthorn players.

The Hawks have a number of enticing defensive options, led by four-time best and fairest winner Sam Mitchell.

A prolific on-baller for more than a decade, the 31-year-old spent a large portion of 2013 at half-back, winning All Australian selection in that position.

As a result, he has been made a dual-position Fantasy player for next season, eligible to be selected as a midfielder or defender.

At $517,700, Mitchell comes at a hefty cost.

But, given he has averaged more than 95 points per game each year since 2009, he is a worthy investment.

Fellow premiership captain Luke Hodge ($491,900) has also been classified as a midfielder/defender for 2014.

Hodge averaged 90.8 as a midfielder this year.

Add in proven performer Grant Birchall ($436,300) and the returning Matt Suckling, and it would not be unreasonable to have four Hawks as starting defenders.

At only $314,400, Suckling is $100,000 cheaper than he was in 2013, before he went down with an anterior cruciate ligament rupture during the NAB Cup and missed the entire premiership season.

The piercing left-footer averaged 90.8 in 2011 and 82.9 in 2012 and, with his return to full fitness progressing well, looks a solid buy.

High-profile recruit Dayle Garlett may be the other big brown and gold bargain.

The West Australian spent 2013 playing senior football in the WAFL, booting 45 goals for Swan Districts.

He is expected to push for senior selection almost immediately and, at $162,600, is less expensive than the top draftees.

As an added bonus, he has also been awarded dual position status as a midfielder/forward.

Two players who will no longer be eligible in dual positions are Hawks vice-captains Jordan Lewis ($498,600) and Jarryd Roughead ($470,100).

Lewis is now a midfielder only, having been also been a forward in 2013, and at his price it is difficult to make a case for selecting him over some of the competition's other top on-ballers.

Roughead was a popular selection as a ruckman/forward last season, but he will be a forward only in 2014.

If he can repeat his average of 86.7, however, he should still hold some appeal for Fantasy coaches.
