GUSTY winds and cool temperatures are forecast for Saturday's Grand Final between Hawthorn and Fremantle at the MCG.

Showers hit Melbourne early in the morning, but the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) expects the wet weather to clear by the time the first ball is bounced.

The forecast makes for difficult conditions, with the players set to navigate strong gusts of wind throughout the match.

"Certainly there will be showers around this morning, but they are going to tend to ease or contract to the south-east during the early afternoon," Peter Blake from the Bureau of Meteorology told AFL.com.au.

"I think by the time the game is on, it will be pretty much clear of showers in the Melbourne area. It will still be quite windy conditions, and it will feel a lot colder than the 16 degrees.

"A peak of 16 (degrees), and there could be some sunny breaks, but it could feel a lot colder anyway.

"The winds are going to be quite gusty today too, the MCG always swirls anyway, but there's going to be quite a bit of gustiness going around. It should be interesting trying to hit targets."

The temperature is expected to drop to around 13 degrees in the hour after the match, when the Premiership Party is underway on the MCG.
