ESSENDON midfielder David Myers has extended his contract with the club until the end of 2016.

Myers, who was contracted until the end of 2014, has agreed to commit to the Bombers for another two seasons.

"I am thrilled to have signed an extension with the club, as I believe we are entering a really exciting new period," Myers said in a statement.

"We have a really strong and united playing group that is heading in the right direction and I am grateful that I get a chance to repay the loyalty the club has shown me."

Myers' services were reportedly highly sought by both Melbourne and St Kilda during the recent trade period, but the Bombers quickly warded his suitors off.

The 24-year-old's re-signing is proof of the club's confidence in him as a player.

"David is a hard working and dedicated player who has tremendous talent. He is a fantastic person to have at our football club," senior coach Mark Thompson said.

"While he understands there are areas of his game to further develop, he is emerging into an established midfielder and we’re excited to have him on board at the club until at least 2016."

Myers has played 65 games for the Bombers since making his debut in 2008.
