GARY Ablett attracted enormous attention for a brilliant performance in his first game as an opposition player at Geelong on Saturday night, but the Gold Coast skipper was upstaged by a fellow Brownlow medallist in the AFL Coaches Association votes.

In his 50th game for the Suns, Ablett amassed 34 disposals, 10 clearances and two goals, the second of which was an amazing effort from the boundary line.

But best-afield honours went to his former midfield comrade Jimmy Bartel, who received the maximum 10 votes after a 30-touch, three-goal game in Geelong's 52-point victory over the Suns.

In fact, Ablett (five votes) was deemed equal second-best with teammate Dion Prestia (29 disposals, 12 tackles).

However, Ablett still extended his lead in the coaches' award to 10 from Essendon skipper Jobe Watson, who failed to earn a vote in his side’s loss to the Sydney Swans at the SCG on Saturday.

Swans champion Adam Goodes put a week of turmoil behind him to kick four goals and collect four votes in the 44-point win over the Bombers.

Swans co-captain Jarrad McVeigh scored a perfect 10 to move into equal-seventh position in the award, while joint leader Kieren Jack (two votes) is now equal-fourth. Dan Hannebery went voteless for just the second time in the past six weeks but remains third.

Melbourne's boom recruit Chris Dawes (four votes) was the only Demon to be recognised by the coaches after the Demons' landslide loss to Hawthorn at the MCG on Sunday.

Fellow key forward Aaron Black was adjudged best-afield after bagging five goals in North Melbourne's big win over St Kilda at Etihad Stadium on Sunday, closely followed by veteran Brent Harvey, who celebrated his 350th game in style.

Other notable features of the coaches votes included Richmond's six-game tyro Nick Vlastuin receiving votes for the second time in three weeks; Bulldogs backman Dale Morris earning his first nod for the season after a horrific run with injury; fellow veteran Simon Black being the only Lion among the votes against Collingwood; and Magpies debutant Kyle Martin immediately attracting attention.
