MICHAEL Voss says the Brisbane Lions could be hunting for more than just out-of-contract Adelaide forward Kurt Tippett when the Gillette AFL Trade Period begins next month.

In June, the Lions signalled their intentions to pursue the Crows' key forward, but speaking with AFL.com.au this week, Voss said they might target other players.

Voss said although the Lions - who made significant strides with 10 wins this season - were not counting their chickens on getting Tippett,  if they did, he wouldn't be the one person that will suddenly push them back to the top eight.

"What he does or doesn't do, it hasn't come up a hell of a lot because nothing can happen [yet]," Voss said.

"Nothing's been communicated the other way, so for us it's waiting and planning and looking at what we can do, and the development of our group."

Crows ready for Tippett exit

Voss said the Lions would explore "other options" to improve their list.

At the end of his first season in charge in 2009, Voss made significant moves during the trade period that ultimately backfired.

Brendan Fevola came from Carlton - and was booted out 12 months later - while fellow mature recruits Amon Buchanan (now retired) and Xavier Clarke (delisted) had little on-field impact.

The club subsequently lost disgruntled Michael Rischitelli (Gold Coast) and Daniel Bradshaw (Sydney Swans) as a result.

On the flipside, there was some success during the period, and Voss is hoping for similar this time around.

Brent Staker had a terrific 2010 before successive anterior cruciate ligament injuries stalled his career, while Andrew Raines and Matt Maguire have blossomed into key players.

"We are pretty committed in making sure we can improve our list in some specific areas and as a result we have to open our eyes to other avenues, not just from within," Voss said.

"I think our midfield still has to develop and whether we look internally or externally for that [is the question].

"Our on-ball brigade in the reserves finals has been [Patrick] Karnezis, [Jared] Polec, [Jack] Crisp, [Billy] Longer and the average age is 19.5. That's exciting.

"We've got to look to promote within, but if we feel like there's a position to look at short-term wise, then we'll look at it.

"If we don't feel like we have someone that can fill a spot immediately, that's the ones we'll look at a bit more heavily."
