ONE DAY after the Gold Coast was provisionally appointed the league’s 17th team, the AFL has offered hope to those campaigning for a Tasmanian franchise.

But the message is that although Tassie’s time will come – it won’t be soon.

“The reality is this – we’ve never said there wouldn’t be a team in Tasmania, but the priority markets for us are the Gold Coast and Western Sydney,” broadcasting and new media chief Gillon McLachlan told afl.com.au.

“We’re in great dialogue with the Tasmanian government. Andrew (Demetriou, AFL CEO) is down there today with the Premier and with AFL Tasmania, launching a state-wide league.

“We’ll continue to work with them and the whole community in Tasmania to grow football in Tasmania in the right way.

“Ultimately, there’ll be a point in time where the prospect of a Tasmanian team is a reality.

“But at the moment our priority is the Gold Coast and Western Sydney.”
