WESTERN Australia's David Swallow and Vic Country's Andrew Hooper are the 2009 Larke Medallists after the selection panel could not separate the pair following their stellar performances at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships

The medal for the best and fairest player at the championships is voted on by the All-Australian team selectors and each player finished with 18 points at the conclusion of the championships at Docklands on Wednesday.

The medal capped a memorable carnival for Swallow, brother of North Melbourne's Andrew, whose side went through undefeated to claim the title.

"It was really unexpected, but I'm really happy with it," Swallow said.

"When you're in a team with guys like Kane Lucas, Anthony Morabito and Mitch Duncan you don't really expect it, but I thought I played my role within the team okay.

"Playing with guys like that really helps me play better. Everyone in the team just wants to help enhance everyone else's game. We al play for each other and it's just been a great result for us to go through undefeated."

Playing off a half-back flank and on the ball, Swallow had an outstanding championships with his performances against the Northern Territory and Vic Metro highlights.

The half-back is too young for this year's draft and will surely be all over the Gold Coast's radar.

Hooper, a 172 cm defender, is a prolific ball-winner and is also good overhead for his size with 26 possessions and 13 marks against Tasmania a highlight.

He joins players of the calibre of Marc Murphy, Paul Hasleby and Byron Schammer in winning the medal.

"You look down the list of names that have won it before and there are some fantastic players there. It's just great to be a part of that," Hooper said.

"It's definitely a huge honour to be judged one of the best and fairest players at the carnival.

"I thought I was playing some consistent footy which was my aim, but this is a surprise.

"My football has been a huge focus for me this year because it is so important and I've been happy with my consistency."

Hooper is eligible for the national draft later this year and while winning the Larke Medal will be a shot in the arm for his draft chances, he's not getting ahead of himself.

"I've got to stay focused on my football," he said.

"If I'm lucky enough to get drafted that will be great. I've certainly done everything I can to get there."
