MICK Malthouse says he will only coach Carlton if "they're the right fit".

Speaking on radio on Sunday, Malthouse announced plans to meet with the Blues and also flagged changes to Carlton's list should he become coach.

"I will meet Carlton. That's a fact. [But] I have not spoken to them. [Sidwell] I guess, would have spoken to them," Malthouse told 3AW on Sunday.

With the footy world abuzz with talk the Blues are set to swoop on out-of-contract Magpie Travis Cloke, Malthouse flagged a tall forward was needed at Visy Park.

"Every side outside the eight has a reason for being outside the eight and I think it's a deficiency in some capacity," he said.

"Carlton would be no exception. They would be looking at bolstering their playing list.

"Perhaps key forward or key back. They're not that flash on the back line for start off."

And while Malthouse is considered the heavy favourite to win the Blues job, the man himself said it was far from guaranteed.

"It would be neglectful to presume this is just going to take place. I would need to through a number of issues to convince myself they're (Carlton) the right fit," Malthouse said.

Malthouse said he was determined to honour a commitment to accompany his daughter on a book-launch tour of Australia in late October through to November and also a week-long family holiday later in the year.

Malthouse said he would take in to consideration the impact on his family, but at the end of the day he alone would make the decision to return to coaching.

"I make the decisions. This is a decision that will be made solely by me," he said.
