NATHAN Buckley will not be making an early start to his assistant coaching role at Collingwood, despite the departure of Brad Scott from the club's coaching ranks.

There had been suggestions in the media that Buckley would fill in for Scott, who has left the Magpies for the senior coaching role at North Melbourne.

But Buckley, speaking at a trial of the kicking test that will feature in future NAB AFL Draft Camps, doused the speculation, saying the club was ably equipped to see out the season without him or Scott.

"If I was at the club now and had been part of the club, I'd be recommending that the current coaches can fill the void that Brad has left," he said.

"There's a lot of leadership in the midfield -- in the playing group -- that I reckon will be able to cover that as well."

Buckley said only the current coaches knew enough about the focuses and processes of the players to get on with the job for the remainder of the season.

“They don't need someone who doesn't know those processes to come in now," he said.

“I also have commitments with (Channel) Seven, the Age and the AFL. There’s plenty of scope at Collingwood to deal with the void that Scotty will leave. I anticipate they’ll do that.”

Buckley said he had been in brief contact with Collingwood players and officials but only informally.

"Now I’m on their future payroll, anything I can help them with this year I will help them with. I’ve stayed in touch with the guys over the last couple of years and tried to stay as impartial as I can,” he said.

“I reckon over the past couple of years at times I’ve been able to be viewed as something other than Collingwood. I’m a Collingwood person again by perception or otherwise and I’ve tried to be fair in my commentary. Once the season is over this year I’m full on.”

Collingwood currently sits third on the ladder with only two rounds of the home-and-away season remaining.
