NORTH Melbourne has issued a clear 'hands off' to Gold Coast with the signing of Queensland native Gavin Urquhart until the end of the 2012 season.

Urquhart, 21, put pen to paper on a new three-year deal on Thursday, as did first-round draft pick Lachie Hansen while, in a further boost to the Roos' defence, 24-year-old Nathan Grima signed on for another two seasons.

Urquhart, the club's second selection (No.21 overall) at the 2006 NAB AFL Draft, has impressed in 32 games since making his debut in round 10 last season.

Originally from Morningside, North was well aware Urquhart would attract the interest of the incoming Gold Coast franchise in the coming months.

"We’re pretty happy to avoid that [situation]," list manager Cameron Joyce told kangaroos.com.au.

"Gav has exceptional ability on the footy field and he can kick the ball really well."

Hansen, who turned 21 last Monday, was taken third overall behind Bryce Gibbs and Scott Gumbleton from the same pool.

He has managed 27 career matches after playing three in his first year at the club but was sidelined for six rounds with a torn hamstring after a promising start to this season.

"It has taken a little while with Lachie, but that’s pretty normal for a player of his size," Joyce said.

"We believe that with a few more games under his belt he'll be a huge part of the future of this club."

Grima has excelled in his first season on the senior list after spending 2008 recovering from a knee reconstruction as a rookie-listed player.

"Nathan has definitely surprised, there's no doubt about that," Joyce said.

"Our expectations of him weren't high given he was coming off a knee reconstruction but it's been a terrific year for him."

The signings follow North's confirmed contract extensions for Andrew Swallow, Robbie Tarrant, Sam Wright and Ben Warren and the announcement of Brad Scott as coach for the next three seasons.
