MELBOURNE has confirmed Harley Bennell has been hospitalised just hours after the Demons recruit announced his retirement.

Police reportedly found Bennell intoxicated around 8pm on Monday night after they were called to check on a disturbance at a Broadbeach apartment, according to The Courier Mail.

The ex-Demon was then taken to hospital in an ambulance.

Bennell breached the AFL's COVID-19 protocols the weekend prior and copped a four-match suspension.

That sanction also cost Melbourne $50,000.

Melbourne took a punt on Bennell through the Pre-Season Supplemental Selection Period. He played five senior games in 2020 but was hopeful of receiving a contract for 2021.

The former No.2 draft pick finishes his 10-year career with just 88 games to his name.
