Australia Day celebrations stretched from the middle of the MCG to well beyond for the Melbourne Football Club, with recognition being given on a number of fronts to those connected with the red and blue colours.

Liam Jurrah, who set the game on fire in his first season in 2009, was recognised as the Northern Territory’s Young Australian of the Year for 2009, and nominated for Young Australian of the Year for 2010. This award was eventually taken by Trooper Mark Donaldson, winner of the Victoria Cross for courage under fire in Afghanistan. Liam’s efforts, in both making his way to the AFL from Central Australia, and working with Warlpiri youth, were hailed by all, from Australia Day Council Chair Adam Gilchrist to Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, both of whom Liam met in a busy week of engagements.

Again connected to the Club’s playing heritage, a great of another era was recognised, with past player Ray Groom being named as an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO). The former No 31 was cited for his service to the Parliament of Tasmania as Premier, for portfolio responsibilities held, and through his service to the community in supporting indigenous, aged and welfare groups.

Yet another Melbourne link also came to the fore in the third of the awards, with MCC President, David Meiklejohn, being named as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). His citation recognises his service to the business sector, and to sport through the Melbourne Football Club.

We congratulate all three on their deserved recognition for achievements, effort and contributions in so many different ways, and thank them for all they mean to the Melbourne Football Club in their accomplishments.
