COLLINGWOOD midfielder Dane Swan said he enjoyed trying to beat Brownlow medallist Greg Williams' possession record of 53 touches as Sunday's clash with Port Adelaide wound down.

Swan, 25, said once the game was won, he started to have some fun hunting down the record that was set in round 19, 1989, by the former champion midfielder.

"After a win, you can probably reflect on your own game, and I didn't really notice until three or four minutes to go when we had the game won," Swan told afl.com.au after the Pies' 38-point victory.

"The crowd was going berserk and all the boys were whispering in my ear and trying to get it to me.

"Stats are the least important though; we got a win. It was good fun in the last three or four minutes, but for the first 115 minutes it was all about the win."

Swan collected 28 touches in the first half alone, which was 13 more than the next most-prolific ball-getter – Port Adelaide's Kane Cornes - on the ground.

He said he wasn't surprised the Power didn't reassess their match-ups despite his busy two terms.

"Kane Cornes was doing a good job on Leon Davis, and I think Leon is our most devastating player," Swan said.

"He can really win a match off his own boot whereas I'm probably not like that. I'm just in and under and plug away.

"With our midfield starting to become a lot better with guys like ‘Pendles’ (Scott Pendlebury) and Leon becoming elite footballers, every once in awhile, one of us gets to spit out and have a bit of a free range.

"Today was my day and maybe next week, Leon will dominate.

"That's the midfield we're aiming to have - we're on our way to achieving an elite midfield."

Swan said the win was extremely valuable to the Magpies, as it kept them in touch with the cluster of clubs currently jostling for a spot in the top eight.

"We needed to win in order to stay with the pack, and thankfully we came out in the second half and played some pretty good footy," he said.

"We haven't won two in a row all year, so we've been a bit inconsistent. To come out and have two in a row really sets us up."
