West Coast has ensured Brisbane coach Leigh Matthews’ 700th game as an AFL player and coach won’t be one to remember with a stunning 14-point victory over the Lions at the Gabba.

The Eagles dominated most areas of the contest on Sunday before running out 12.15 (87) to 10.13 (73) winners.

It’s the second time in as many years that the Eagles have beaten the Lions at the Gabba, following last year’s amazing 69-point triumph.

For the Lions, the loss breaks their 11-match unbeaten streak at the Gabba after last tasting defeat against Sydney in round 20 last season.

It is also the first time Brisbane has dropped consecutive games this year.

Veteran forward Phil Matera was outstanding for the Eagles, providing the spark needed for the visitors who had to stave off several concerted attempts by the Lions to draw their way back into the game.

Dynamic youngster Andrew McDougall booted four goals for the visitors while the Lions were led by skipper Michael Voss, Shaun Hart and Tim Notting who all kicked two.

West Coast dominated the opening half on the back of four goals from McDougall.

McDougall, the fifth pick in the 2000 AFL draft, made the usually faultless Lions defenders look like park footballers for most of the first two quarters with his ruthless attack on the football and strong marking.

Brisbane kicked the first two goals of the game through Martin Pike and Justin Leppitsch before the Eagles claimed four successive majors to close the opening quarter with a 17-point buffer.

The second term began started in the same fashion as the first with the Lions kicking two early goals to close the gap to five points.

But just as it did in the opening term, the momentum swung in favour of the Eagles who dominated and possession as well as the scoreboard attendant’s attention.

McDougall finished the term with two more goals while Ashley Sampi and Quentin Lynch added majors to guide the visitors to a 15-point lead at the long break.

It could have been much worse for the Lions however, with West Coast’s forwards – in particularly Matera – missing numerous opportunities.

The Lions managed to claw back to within 10 points of the Eagles when Notting slotted home a miraculous snap from the pocket, but a goal to Matera and several more behinds saw West Coast’s lead back out to 19 heading into the final term.

West Coast coach John Worsfold said he wasn’t too concerned about whether his side takes part in this year’s finals series despite the fact that the win puts the Eagles level on points with fellow top-eight contenders Essendon, Sydney and the Kangaroos.

“I suppose I took the view about six weeks ago that we messed up some good opportunities and really now, the focus has been on playing some good footy week to week against different opposition, so I’m not too worried about September action,” Worsfold said.

Worsfold paid tribute to his side in keeping the triple-premiers at bay during crucial stages of the match.

“There were a couple of times in the game when Brisbane pushed really hard to try and get the game back on their terms and we managed to steady and fight back,” Worsfold said.

"So it’s a real credit to our group, they’re getting to know each other really well and playing well, and identifying those (danger) times in a game and acting on it.”

Brisbane Lions coach Leigh Matthews rued some missed opportunities in front of goal particularly in the final term, but praised the Eagles on their performance.

"15 points isn't a gigantic margin so we did have good parts of the game - in fact we hung in there," he said afterwards.

"They had good movement and had targets to kick to."

The Lions coach dismissed the notion his team looked 'flat' since the 141 point win over Adelaide two weeks ago.

"When you are beaten it always looks that way," he said.

"You very rarely win and say 'they looked terrific'."

The umpires were roundly criticised by the pro Lions crowd throughout the day, but Matthews would not match his Collingwood counterpart Mick Malthouse's effort from last week in linking the solar system to the umpiring department.

"I don't have a philosophical bone in my body at this point of the day," Matthews said.
