PORT Adelaide coach Mark Williams expects to sign a new contract with the club within the next week.

Williams said the Power's upset 11-point loss to former cellar-dwellers Melbourne on Sunday at the MCG would not influence his decision to remain at the helm of the club.

"I expect to sign in the next week," Williams stated, in his post-match press conference on Sunday evening.

Williams was then asked if there was any chance he wouldn't sign in the coming week, and he responded with, 'I wouldn't think so'.

He denied discrepancies with money had been the sticking point between himself and the club, and said it was purely a decision that needed time dedicated to it.

"There's nothing to do with finances of the deal that are unsettled. Nothing," he said.

"It's just getting the little things right. There are a few things that need to be sorted through.

"With the football week, do you think we would talk about my contract today? Not at all. Yesterday? Not at all.

"There are only limited times in a week where you would actually get a little space to be able to reflect on that.

"It's a pretty major decision for both the club and for me moving forward, so you want to spend some time on it.

"My manager Ricky [Nixon] is over here so that makes it more difficult as well."

Williams was also asked if he will be happy when his contract ceases to be the topic of conversation at press conferences.

"It will be outstanding," he said.
