STAR Essendon recruit Brendon Goddard is impressing his new club by leading the way at the club's pre-season training camp in the United States.

The former Saint, who joined the Bombers as a free agent in October, received praise from Essendon assistant coach and former Adelaide captain Simon Goodwin.

Goddard is one of ten Essendon players training at altitude in Boulder, Colorado.

Goodwin said Goddard had settled in quickly and was already a leader of the group.

"He is moving really well, his body is fresh, he is fit and he has started his training really well," Goodwin told essendonfc.com.au.

"He has settled into the group and acts like a leader of the group. That is what we expect from him as a 27-year-old coming into a new footy club you are looking for those leadership qualities and no doubt he has started to display those.

"You can already see that the younger guys (like) Heppell, Melksham, Zaharakis have attracted to him. He commands those sort of leadership qualities and they are really feeding off that."

Goodwin added the players had began to train well after a sluggish start getting used to the conditions.

"They are now handling the conditions fine and it feels normal again and they have really embraced the training," he said.

Goddard will speak to the Essendon website from Colorado on Monday.
