EAST Perth player Beau Chatley has had surgery after suffering a serious neck and spinal injury in the WAFL at Leederville Oval on Saturday, but it remains unclear whether he will make a full recovery.

The 21-year-old reportedly had no feeling below his neck after his jumper was pulled over his head and he was tackled into the ground during the reserves clash between East Perth and West Perth.

In a statement issued on Sunday, East Perth said Chatley underwent surgery at Royal Perth Hospital overnight.

"The indication at this time is that the damage to Beau's neck and spinal cord was significant. It is not yet known whether Beau will make a full recovery," the club statement said.

"On behalf of Beau's parents, Olivia and Brett, and their family, the club thanks all those who have sent expressions of love and support and asks for the family to be afforded their privacy at this difficult time.

"The club will provide further updates as information becomes available and will continue to provide Beau and his family with its full support."

Chatley was carried from the ground on a stretcher and taken immediately to hospital.

On Saturday night, WAFL general manager Steve Hargrave expressed the League's fears following the incident.

"We want Beau, his family and his friends to know that they have the full support of everyone at the WAFL,” Hargrave said.

"We are working with East Perth and West Perth to provide any support required to the clubs and their playing groups.

"We will also be reviewing the incident in accordance with our normal match review processes."

Chatley, a member of the WA state 18s squad in 2013, has played 84 games for the Royals, including three League matches.
