FOOTY fans will have access to free wi-fi at the MCG from this season.

In addition, access to 3G and 4G networks at the stadium has been improved.

Melbourne Cricket Club boss Stephen Gough said the wi-fi network held up well over the summer cricket season when the West Indies toured Australia.

"We have received fantastic feedback about the free wi-fi throughout the summer and look forward to seeing how fans enjoy the enhanced connectivity during the AFL season," Gough said.

"There are some big games scheduled for the MCG in round one and we encourage everyone to connect and make the most of the improvements."

More than 227 kilometres of cable was used to install the wi-fi system.

The AFL season kicks off on Thursday, with Richmond hosting Carlton at the MCG.
