XAVIER Ellis could be the hidden gem of this year's free agent class and is set for a fresh start at a new club after eight injury-plagued years at Hawthorn.

So says his manager Paul Connors as Ellis, the third overall pick in the 2005 NAB AFL Draft, weighs up his future.

The 25-year-old managed just two games in 2013 in another year blighted by injury, taking his career tally to 86, but Connors has told AFL.com.au's Gillette Trade Radio his client has plenty to offer.

"He's had a medical at a couple of clubs," Connors said.

"I think he's extremely confident in his body. I've been speaking to him every day. He could run a 3k tomorrow.

"I think he might be the little jewel in the crown this year.

"When we talk in 12 months' time about who did well, I think the club that gets Xavier Ellis might be the one."

Ellis has been linked with Fremantle and Adelaide, while Connors said remaining at the Hawks was still an option, but "both parties agree that a change would be good".

Of some other players in Connors' stable, he said Essendon forward Scott Gumbleton was being tempted by a potential return home to join Fremantle, but won't be joining the Western Bulldogs.

The Dogs made a big play for Gumbleton this time last year.

Another Bombers forward in Stewart Crameri is still expected to join Brendan McCartney at the Bulldogs, although that could drag on for some weeks, according to Connors.

"I respect Essendon's view he's worth more than what the Bulldogs have offered," Connors said.

He added he thought it was unlikely Crameri would remain at Windy Hill.

Billy Longer's future remains in doubt, with the ruckman having already been stunned by Hawthorn's recruitment of former St Kilda big man Ben McEvoy.

Connors said the youngster still harbours hopes of becoming a Hawk and could also remain at the Lions under new coach Justin Leppitsch.

"He's out of contract and he's looking at his options and Hawthorn is definitely one of those options," Connors said.

"(The McEvoy deal) certainly took us by surprise. But that's footy. Footy is a brutal business.

"I see it every day, Billy has probably seen it once. That's how the AFL is.

"He could go to the Hawks still and he could stay at Brisbane.

"He's indicated his preference is to come back and play for the Hawks.

"That could eventuate."
