SYDNEY Swans' new Canadian recruit, former rugby union international Mike Pyke, has said he is aiming for a 2009 senior debut.

The 200cm, 105kg aspiring ruckman was signed last year after finishing a two-year contract with French Top 14 side US Montauban and was officially added to the Swans' rookie list on Tuesday.

"I think that ideally, towards the end of the season, I'd like to play a game," Pyke said.

"If I could it would be amazing. It all depends how my skills come along but in terms of fitness and body type I'll be fine. It's things like practicing and being able to hit a 20-yard handball that I need to perfect."

However the 24-year-old insisted that he wasn't feeling the pressure to don the Swans Guernsey in his first season.

"The coaches have been good in that they haven't put any pressure on me, but sometime next season would be nice."

The Canadian said he was enjoying the Sydney Swans culture, which was in stark contrast to that of rugby clubs he had played at.

"Everyone is really honest with each other," he said.

"You have young guys giving advice to older guys and the older guys take it to heart. In rugby, if a young guy who hadn't even played senior football yet said to a senior player that they should be doing this or that, they'd just never get away with it, never.

"Whereas here, the feedback process is really good, so it keeps everyone on level terms. That's something that makes this club quite special. Maybe I'm being naive, but I can't see that there are any cliques on the team."
