THE GIANTS are set to appoint Cam Bernasconi as their new AFLW head coach.

Womens.afl understands Greater Western Sydney will make the appointment of Bernasconi official imminently, where he will replace the recently departed club legend Alan McConnell ahead of next season.

Bernasconi has been the head coach of the Giants Academy since 2020 and has worked in talent development for the best part of a decade, having also held other roles in ACT/NSW football programs since 2014.

A player for the club in its first ever competitive game with Team GWS in the TAC Cup back in 2010, coincidentally then coached by McConnell, Bernasconi was also an assistant coach during the AFLW team's inaugural season in 2017.

The 29-year-old, who once enjoyed a successful playing career in the NEAFL, has since spent five years as a talent manager at the Giants Academy and the last three seasons as its head coach. He has looked after both the male and female programs in his role.

While with the Giants Academy, Bernasconi played an integral part in the development of several of the club's AFL stars and is said to have been a key member in the identification of local talent such as young midfielder Tom Green.

The Giants will be the last AFLW club to fill their coaching vacancy ahead of the start of an 18-team competition next season, having reached a "mutual agreement" to part ways with the experienced McConnell last month.

Port Adelaide announced former Carlton and Brisbane player Lauren Arnell as its first ever senior AFLW coach earlier on Tuesday, while Bec Goddard (Hawthorn), Natalie Wood (Essendon) and Scott Gowans (Sydney) will take charge of the other three expansion teams.

Bernasconi is set to become the Giants' third AFLW head coach, following in the footsteps of Tim Schmidt (2017) and McConnell (2018-22). The club finished ninth last season with a 4-6 record, two games outside the top-six.
