THE NEXT group of young talent has been welcomed into the NAB AFL Women's competition, headed by Sydney's newly crowned No.1 pick Montana Ham

The tall midfielder sent shockwaves through the competition last week when she nominated for the New South Wales draft pool, not her native Victoria.

Fellow Victorian Jas Fleming - daughter of former Australian cricketer Damien - was selected by Hawthorn with pick No.2.

The Hawks added top talents Mackenzie Eardley, Charlotte Baskaran and Bridie Hipwell with picks No.6, 9 and 10, while Essendon snapped up Amber Clarke and Paige Scott with picks No.4 and 8 respectively.

Fellow expansion side Port Adelaide picked up tough midfielder Hannah Ewings with pick No.3.

Ham was joined at the Swans by fellow Victorian Sofia Hurley, who was selected with pick No.5.

In one of the night's greatest moments, Zoe Wakfer - who was at the official draft function to support sister Lauren, who was drafted by West Coast with pick No.15 - was also taken by the Eagles with pick No.36. She wasn't even wearing a club polo, such was her lack of expectation on the night.

Amid the influx of young talent, several former AFLW players also found new homes, while some were re-drafted by their former club.

Maeve Chaplin was picked up by former club Melbourne, while Mia Skinner was re-drafted by Geelong.

Former Blue Brooke Vernon found a new home at the Western Bulldogs, while former Sun Dee Heslop was picked up by crosstown rival Brisbane.

Several VFLW players were rewarded for strong seasons in the state league, with Katelyn Cox picked up by Richmond, and Southern Saints duo Deanna Jolliffe and Hannah Stuart selected by St Kilda.

The first pass of the night came from Gold Coast at pick No.65, with Collingwood, Melbourne and Greater Western Sydney also forfeiting a draft selection.
