GOLD Coast wants its fledgling NAB AFL Women's team to be packed with Queenslanders, but Tuesday's draft will be different as the Suns cast the net far and wide to add experience.

The AFLW newcomers have eight NAB AFL Draft selections – the first of which comes at pick 18 – to fill out their list of 30 players.

Currently they have 18 players from Queensland and four from the Northern Territory signed to play in their 2020 debut season.

Gold Coast's head of women's football, Fiona McLarty, said the young Suns now needed some old heads.

"We might need some mature players from other states to help us," McLarty said on Monday.

"At the draft we're going for a real mix of mature players, and there's some really good talent coming through our Academy programs."

DRAFT PREVIEW Who'll go No.1 in 2019?

For the first time in its existence, Brisbane will have to share the Queensland talent, with players split into two zones and able to nominate their zone of residence or the entire state.

There's already a distinct Lions flavour to the Suns' outfit, led by coach David Lake, who was an assistant to Craig Starcevich in Brisbane's first three seasons.

A number of players, headed by former Lions vice-captain Sam Virgo and Gold Coast junior Jamie Stanton, will also don Gold Coast colours after previously playing for their QClash rivals.

"Part of the reason we got a second licence in Queensland was because of the (strong) local talent," McLarty said.

"It's the first time Brisbane has had to go into a 'real' draft, I suppose, with someone else picking from that pool.

"We think there'll be a really good rivalry like there is between the men's teams."
