FOR THE first time in seven years, AFLW players have a summer free from footy.

The first six seasons of the competition were played during the early months of the year, meaning January was a month filled with either playing or pre-season training.

But season seven was played in August, and the players are making the most of their free time during the summer this year.

From engagements to music festivals to snorkelling, from Bali to Ireland to Mexico, the AFLW's biggest stars were busy.

Fresh off winning Richmond's best and fairest award, Monique Conti swapped footy for basketball, joining the Southside Flyers in the WNBL competition and playing along Australian basketball legend Lauren Jackson.

Western Bulldogs captain Ellie Blackburn and Dog-turned-Bomber Bonnie Toogood bundled up and braved the cold to see the sights in New York.

Greater Western Sydney's Izzy Huntington, Georgia Garnett and Isadora McLeay joined the Bulldogs' Eleanor Brown, Katie Lynch and Daisy Bateman and North Melbourne's Alice O'Loughlin in Mexico.

Collingwood players headed to Bali for their footy trip, where they chased waterfalls and sunrises.

The Pies weren't the only team to head to Bali, with Brisbane players also keen for some rest and relaxation - and monkeys.

The Crows also headed to Bali, making the most of the marine life on Nusa Penida.

Melbourne captain Daisy Pearce took the premiership cup to her hometown of Wandiligong.

Nat Grider joined her Brisbane teammate Orla O'Dwyer in Ireland for Christmas.

Fellow Lion Ally Anderson spent time in Bali with her teammates then travelled to Vietnam and then Korea for Christmas, before heading to Europe.

Adelaide's Mckenzie Dowrick, Caitlin Gould and Chelsea Biddell went to Wildlands Music Festival.

Plenty of other players went to music festivals over the break, with sisters Georgie (Geelong) and Maddy (Essendon) Prespakis heading to Beyond the Valley with Georgie's teammate Amy McDonald.

Collingwood's Sarah Rowe showed off her soccer skills after signing with A-League Women's club Melbourne Victory.

Melbourne's Tayla Harris and Richmond's Kodi Jacques trained and played footy with locals in Japan.

St Kilda's Caitlin Greiser got engaged to partner Mitch on a boat cruise down the Yarra River in December.

Sydney's Bridie Kennedy also got engaged, with partner Nick popping the question in Sorrento, with help from the pair's pups.

West Coast's Belinda Smith and Aisling McCarthy took on three new sports, competing in a triathlon in Perth.
