IN SUCH an uncertain time, it's hard to get excited by any small positives.

But considering how Greater Western Sydney midfielder Tait Mackrill has had to scrap and fight to even keep herself on a list, the honour of earning a round six NAB AFL Women's Rising Star nomination is something that deserves recognition.

With 20 disposals in the win over Adelaide, Mackrill recorded comfortably her best game at AFLW level to date.

"Personally it is a pretty big achievement for myself," Mackrill told womens.afl.

RISING STARS Emerging Giant, key Dog rewarded with nominations

The 20-year-old admits the timing of the nomination makes it feel a bit "insignificant" given what's going on around the world, but it marks a point where her career has taken a huge turn.

The young Giant was picked up in the 2017 NAB AFLW Rookie Draft and did not play at all in her first year.

In year two she notched up three games but was cut from the list, before being extended a lifeline with pick 95 in the 2019 draft.

"It's definitely been quite a journey," Mackrill said.

"It's not been easy, but it's been worth it."

Mackrill admits there were definitely times where she thought her dream wouldn't play out the way she planned.

"I think anyone in that position would have doubts as to whether things were going to go the way they hoped," Mackrill said.

"I questioned it at times but I never gave up.

"I was going to fight to the death to get there."

Mackrill admits her fitness wasn't up to scratch, and although she still has "a long way to go" in that regard, it's been the area she's worked hardest on to find success.

The Giants have also come a long way over the pre-season, particularly off the field.

"The biggest improvement I've seen amongst the group is the culture and love for the game," Mackrill said.

"You're ride or die, you're like sisters up here."

Despite having a breakout game, Mackrill knows her spot in the 21 is not cemented just yet - and that's okay right now.

"Nothing's a certainty and I take each week as another amazing opportunity to just enjoy the game," she said.
