BROUGHT TO YOU BYNAB

GOLD Coast veteran Tiarna Ernst has hung up the boots, with last Friday marking the cut-off date for inactive players ahead of Tuesday's NAB AFLW Draft.

If players are unavailable for the entire season, their club gains an extra selection at the back end of the draft to fill their spot.

Suns tall Jasmyn Hewett, GWS forward Jacinda Barclay and West Coast defender McKenzie Dowrick are unavailable for the 2021 season.

Geelong's Kate Darby had already announced her pregnancy and is consequently unavailable, while Lion Gabby Collingwood will continue her recovery from a torn ACL.

Hewett is unavailable due to work commitments, while West Coast released a statement saying Dowrick needed time "to recover from a surgical procedure that has resulted in ongoing complications."

"The club completely understands and respects the need for McKenzie to take additional time to focus on her health," head of female football Adam Selwood said.

"We look forward to supporting her through this process to ensure she is ready for the 2022 AFLW season and the next stages of her life."

Ernst, who has juggled her role as an obstetrician with four seasons in the AFLW, has retired with 29 games to her name and a premiership medal won at the Western Bulldogs in 2018.

The 32-year-old has played all over the ground during her AFLW career, but was most recently employed as a winger by the Suns after moving north for work commitments.

She will remain in contact with the young Gold Coast line-up in a mentoring capacity.

"I have been proud of my ability and determination to always give 100% to training, preparation and every game I have played," Ernst said.

"Somehow, crazily, I have done this all while still balancing a demanding medical profession, passing specialty exams, months of night shifts and long work hours.

"Ultimately, I recognise that the ongoing balance between my medical career and AFLW is no longer something I am capable of maintaining at the high standard I have previously.

"It is also time for me to focus on the next exciting chapter of my medical career as a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist."

With the final draft order now set following the cut-off for inactive players, up to 61 selections will be made on Tuesday night.

EXPLAINER How the new-look AFLW Draft will work in 2020

Due to the part-time nature of the competition, players nominate the state in which they wish to be drafted so they do not have to move across the country.
