RICHMOND has taken Northern Knights midfielder Ellie McKenzie with the first overall selection in the 2020 NAB AFLW Draft.

McKenzie, 17, played for Fitzroy junior football club before graduating to the Northern Knights in 2016.

An elite kick, McKenzie possesses excellent speed on the outside, but is more than capable of winning her own footy in the middle of a pack. 

She was named All Australian at last year's NAB AFLW under-18 championships.

At 176cm, McKenzie can also go forward and have a big impact on the scoreboard.

McKenzie is the younger sister of former North Melbourne rookie Tom.

The Tigers seriously struggled in the midfield in their inaugural year, finishing the six rounds of the shortened season as the worst clearance side in the competition.

While McKenzie won't answer all their woes, she should play a role alongside recruits Sarah Hosking and Sarah Dargan, skipper Katie Brennan and best and fairest Monique Conti.

Speaking to womens.afl before the draft, McKenzie recounted her previous experience with Richmond, having been invited to the club as part of a talent ID day when she was 14.

"I got linked there somehow through (Tigers' head of women's footy) Kate Sheahan and some people at Richmond, they'd seen me play or something. There were about 20 of us invited," McKenzie said.

"We got a tour of the facilities and it was amazing to be in that elite environment and get a sense of what it would be like to play at an AFLW club.

"Little did I know that maybe I'd be at a similar club in four or five years."
