MELBOURNE recruits Chris Dawes and Shannon Byrnes' immediate impact at their new club has been rewarded with inclusion in the Demons' nine-man leadership group for 2013.

The Demons announced their leadership group on Friday after an extensive process involving players, coaches and staff.

Jack Grimes and Jack Trengove have retained their roles as co-captains, while 2012 club best and fairest Nathan Jones has been elevated to vice-captain.

Dawes joined the Demons from Collingwood in exchange for picks 20 and 45 during last year's trade period, while Byrnes was snapped up as an unrestricted free agent in October.

The pair is on track to debut for their new club in round one against Port Adelaide.

"We are pleased at the impact of Shannon Byrnes and Chris Dawes since their arrival. Their leadership and experience was one of the reasons we pursued them during the free agency and trade periods," Neeld said.

"Both Jack Grimes and Jack Trengove experienced a challenging year in 2012, but in their first year as captains, we were very happy with their development and have full confidence that this will continue in 2013.

"Nathan Jones has been recognised for his contributions both on and off the field last season, and he, along with the others' leadership, will provide great support for our captains."

Emerging midfielder Jordie McKenzie is the other newcomer to the group, while Mitch Clark, James Frawley and Colin Garland continue in their leadership roles.

Ruckman Mark Jamar and retired defender Clint Bartram make way.

Neeld said Jamar was disappointed to be omitted from the group, but that he had handled himself with distinction and professionalism.

As part of the selection process, players were rated in the 10 most important categories of leadership, which included character, competence and competitiveness.
