HAWTHORN is hopeful small forward Paul Puopolo has escaped serious damage to his knee after landing awkwardly from a marking contest during Saturday night's NAB Cup clash with Gold Coast.

Puopolo spent several seconds on the ground clutching his left knee after the incident late in the Hawks' one-point loss.

But he was eventually able to walk from the ground unaided, and club doctors later diagnosed a hyper-extension.

Hawthorn football operations general manager Mark Evans said the 25-year-old was likely to have a scan on Monday.

"He was walking around this morning and walked on and off the plane no dramas," Evans told AFL.com.au after returning to Melbourne on Sunday.

"He laid there for a little while, but he did jog off, and that's always a positive sign."

Evans said the rest of the Hawks line-up had emerged "reasonably clear" from the losses to the Suns and Brisbane Lions.

"There are a few bumps and bruises, but nothing out of the ordinary," he said.
