DANIEL Currie has a golden opportunity to stake a claim as North Melbourne's No.1 big man after being selected as the Roos' sole ruckman for their round three NAB Cup clash against Geelong this Saturday.

North announced Currie's selection on NMFC.com.au on Thursday, saying Todd Goldstein, who has largely been North's first-choice ruckman since 2011, would play for North's VFL affiliate North Ballarat on Saturday.

North coach Brad Scott said the Roos were using Saturday's match to see what Currie could do as a sole ruckman.

"Obviously, we are well aware of what Todd (Goldstein) can do on the field already and the NAB Cup gives us the chance to have a really good look at Dan and expose him to some elite competition in Geelong, while also giving him sole-ruck responsibility," Scott said.

"While we were really keen to see Dan one-out, we were also conscious of Goldy's conditioning and it's important that he continues to get some good fitness work in prior to round one, so we will play him in the VFL curtain-raiser with North Ballarat.

"This is about giving Dan the chance to show us what he can do, without Goldy there to lean on.  It's exciting for him to get this opportunity and we're really confident he'll do well and carry the load."

Currie, 24, has been extremely impressive since joining North via pick No.56 in last year's NAB AFL Draft, having previously spent five years on the Sydney Swans' list without playing an AFL game.

In round one of the NAB Cup, North chose to divide its ruck duties, with Goldstein playing in the opening game against Melbourne and Currie taking over in the final game against Richmond. Currie's performance against the Tigers earned him praise from Scott.

Goldstein and Currie shared North's ruck work in its round two NAB Cup win over Gold Coast last Saturday, with Currie having 20 hit-outs to Goldstein's 16 and chipping in with two goals.
