FOR BRISBANE coach Michael Voss the problem is obvious - insipid opening quarters on the road.

Unfortunately for the under-pressure coach, the solution is proving a little more complex.

Tom Rockliff agreed with his coach, the midfielder summarising Sunday's 10-goal loss to Sydney at the SCG by saying; "we've matched it with the best team in the comp for three quarters, but we let ourselves down in one".

It's a familiar tale of woe for Voss, who also watched his side give up big early leads in away losses to Western Bulldogs and North Melbourne this season.

The Lions leaked the first six goals against the reigning premiers on Sunday, all but ending their hopes of springing an upset.

"What do we put it down to? I'm not 100 per cent sure at the moment. But it has to change," Voss said.

"You do (scratch your head a little bit) ... we've looked through the week at all the little things that might be making a difference and I think it's been very, very sound.

"There should be no reason why we're not coming to games in the right frame of mind.

"I felt quite OK at the start of the game, looking at the players."

On top of their internal issues, the pre-season premiers face a horrible run with games against West Coast, Essendon, Carlton, Collingwood, Fremantle, Geelong and Hawthorn in the next seven weeks.

Losses in those fixtures, and many pundits would be tipping such results on current form, would end the Lions' hopes of returning to the finals for the first time since 2009.

Voss, who is out of contract at season's end, denied his 2-4 side were approaching the doomsday stage.

"Not at all. We're six games into the season.

"We've got West Coast next week at our home venue .. and we've talked a hell of a lot in pre-season about playing well there for our fans.

"We're not doing it on the road at the moment, but there's been some good signs at home."
