AFL PLAYERS have reacted angrily to an incident on Friday night in which Sydney Swans star Adam Goodes was allegedly racially vilified, with teammate Dan Hannebery labelling it a "disgrace".

The Swans celebrated a significant win on Friday night that saw them entrench themselves in the top four, but the club was also left shocked by the incident late in the fourth quarter.

"That's pretty sad, pretty shocking," Hannebery told AFL.com.au on Friday night as details of the incident emerged.

"The person who did that has to have a hard look at themselves.

"It is a disgrace considering the era that we're in. It's just completely unacceptable.

"I'm really shocked."

While Swans players rallied around Goodes in the rooms, opposition players took to Twitter to voice their shock and support.

"Speechless and really flat," Tiger forward Jack Riewoldt tweeted, adding: "Bloody disappointing."

Geelong captain Joel Selwood typified widespread admiration of Goodes' conduct coupled with his best-on-ground performance.

"And you would have thought in this round too …" Cats teammate Allen Christensen wrote.

"Not to assume the worst, but to disrespect a legend on Indigenous Round is appalling," West Coast star Nic Naitanui tweeted.

"Shameful she's only young too."

Richmond tall David Astbury led the praise for Collingwood's swift response after the game.
