WEST COAST expects forward Josh Kennedy to be available after the Eagles' bye next weekend after missing Sunday's win over St Kilda with calf soreness.

Kennedy was a late withdrawal from the four-point win at Etihad Stadium after pulling up sore the morning of the game.

West Coast coach John Worsfold believes Kennedy should be fine to face Hawthorn on June 21 when the Eagles return to Melbourne to begin their second half of the season.

"I would expect so. It was a really late, last-minute decision that he wasn't going to be right for today so maybe in two or three days he would have been right to play," Worsfold said.

"Until lunchtime today he was playing and he did his own fitness test, walk/jog, and some stuff to see if he thought he'd be able to play, and he wasn't comfortable that he would be able to play at the level required.

"It was around 12.15[pm] I got the call today."

Worsfold said he was happy with the role Andrew Embley was able to play in the forward line in the unexpected absence of Kennedy.

It was initially thought Embley would start as the substitute in his second senior match back from a foot injury.

Worsfold said a range of Eagles would benefit from next weekend's bye given the team's lengthy list of injured players.

"[Darren] Glass was just a little bit sore this week so it's given [Mark] LeCras, Glass and now Kennedy a good fortnight now to really rest their bodies," he said.

"[Beau] Waters … he felt he could play, we felt he could play [but] that was going to jeopardise his continuity throughout the rest of the year so we made a decision to look long-term for Beau in the hope we were going to be good enough to win tonight.

"I believe we made the right call there."

He also said the bye would help to freshen up Nic Naitanui, who had 15 disposals and 31 hit-outs in his sixth straight game after a groin injury saw him start his season in round six.

"Don't underestimate the fact that he came in and he's had a big month or so back in and kicking the winning goal against North … it takes its toll on you emotionally and mentally and physically," he said.

"This break is perfect timing after the build up that he's had and he'll be back feeling top notch in a couple of weeks."
