DELISTED Greater Western Sydney midfielder Sam Reid has been appointed as a development coach with the expansion club.

As part of his new role, the 23-year-old will play for the Giants' reserves in an on-field leadership role.

Reid played 14 games for GWS over two seasons, after crossing from the Western Bulldogs at the end of 2011, but was hampered by niggling injuries.

He had played 10 games in four years at the Bulldogs.

"My body wasn't up to the rigours of another season playing in the AFL, so this is a good way to be able to move on to the next stage of my life," Reid said in a statement on Wednesday night.

"Helping the young guys develop is something I'm passionate about and to be able to help the Giants take the next step is an exciting challenge."

The majority of the GWS playing group started pre-season training on Wednesday.
