NATHAN Fyfe has claimed his first best and fairest award at AFL level, taking out Fremantle's 2013 Doig Medal at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre on Saturday night.

Fyfe won by 17 votes from 2010 club champion David Mundy with Michael Johnson finishing third after receiving his first All Australian honour in 2013.

Five coaches voted on every player in every game. Players received either 5 votes, 4, 3, 2, 1 or 0 for each match by each coach.

The club took the unusual step of awarding votes to players who were "rested" in round 23. The players that were rested were awarded their average votes for the previous 22 matches for that game.

Fyfe was also awarded the player of the finals to cap off a remarkable season for the 22-year-old. He averaged nearly 26 disposals per game and kicked 18 goals for the year.

"My goal at the start of the year was to play a full year and be part of a successful side that pushed towards September but this is beyond expectations," Fyfe said.

Fyfe thanked his former coach Mark Harvey for first giving him the opportunity at Fremantle. But he reserved special praise for Ross Lyon's impact on his game.

"He's a highly accountable coach," Fyfe said.

"He teaches everyone that they need to do their role, nothing more, nothing less.

"And that really struck a chord with me. I don't need to be the best player, no one needs to go and win the game for us, you just need to go and do your role and what the team requires you to do and it's very simple under Ross.

"He really simplifies the game plan, simplifies what you need to do each week and you ask any of our players we love playing under him."

Defender Lee Spurr was named Best Clubman following a superb season.

Cameron Sutcliffe won the Beacon Award for the best first or second-year player. Sutcliffe played 19 matches, including all three finals, after playing just four matches in his debut season of 2012.

Last year's best and fairest Ryan Crowley received the Players’ Award, which is given to the player who was deemed to have best reflected the values set by the playing group at the start of the season.

The Dockers also awarded Life Membership to club doctor Ken Withers, and senior physiotherapist Jeffrey Boyle for their contribution to the club since it's inception. They join former presidents Ross Kelly and Rick Hart as the only non-playing life members at Fremantle.
