THE DISMAL performance of Australia's International Rules team has gone before the AFL Commission, but the series may not be dead.

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou doesn't want to see the concept end on such a sour note after Australia's all-Indigenous side was thrashed in both matches last month.

Commissioners discussed the fall out from the series and plans for the future when they met in Queensland earlier this week.

"Look, I hope we don't finish the International Rules series on that note. Obviously it was disappointing what happened in Ireland, but our Irish counterparts are very keen to come to Australia," Demetriou said on Wednesday.

"We discussed this at the Commission the last couple of days and we've got a couple of ideas."

Up for discussion is the timing of the series, the prospect of it being played as a stand-alone game rather than two tests and the composition of the squad.

Demetriou said that could mean reverting to basing selection on the All Australian side.

He said the venue was also important, suggesting Gold Coast's Metricon Stadiium could be a possibility.

"We haven't made a decision yet, but what I will say is we are committed to trying to work through that issue to see if we can get it right," Demetriou said.
