MATTHEW Lloyd says James Hird's position at Essendon is safe and that his premiership teammate will return to coach the Bombers next year.

Essendon convened a board meeting on Friday to discuss Hird's future after his wife Tania reignited claims AFL boss Andrew Demetriou tipped off the Bombers about the supplements scandal.

On Friday, Dons chairman Paul Little couldn't guarantee Hird would return to his coaching role in 2015 after his 12-month ban expires, but Lloyd said the pair had talked on Saturday.

"My understanding is that Hird and Little have spoken and James Hird will be the coach in 2015,'' the champion Essendon goalkicker said on 3AW on Saturday night.

He repeated his claim on Sunday.

"I received information yesterday that James Hird and Paul Little had spoken yesterday," Lloyd told Channel Nine.

"They smoothed a lot of things out and James Hird believes that he will be the coach of Essendon moving forward.

"I wouldn't have gone with it unless I was certain."

Essendon's board is expected to meet on Monday or Tuesday to discuss Tania Hird's comments.

"I don't want to comment on Matthew's statements or anyone other statements or any press articles," Little told reporters on Sunday.

"The appropriate forum for further discussion now is the Essendon board.

"We really now need to deal with the facts.

"The facts are that certain things have been said. We need to assess that and decide what we do next.

"So I'm not going to speculate about what may or may not happen."

He told Channel Seven before Essendon's win over North Melbourne on Friday the club's board would meet again this week in relation to Hird.

Little said he had wanted to speak with Hird before that "to understand the facts" behind Tania Hird's interview.

Hird is contracted until the end of 2016 to coach the Bombers, but Little said the pair needed to talk through what had happened.

"There are certain expectations on any senior coach that we have in relation to what we expect from them and what we expect from the people that surround them," Little said.

"If we're not getting what we expect then clearly that's something that needs to be dealt with."

Hird's father Allan has also entered the debate, suggesting that his son had been 'bullied' by the AFL, which was "judge, jury and executioner".

He told Fairfax Media that James had not asked him to speak out.

''James doesn't need my defence, I want to make that clear, he can defend himself, and so can Tania.

''I think they have done an excellent job. If he had the opportunity to put his case, I think it would be so much better.

''The AFL has confounded him thus far."

An Essendon spokesman declined to comment when contacted by AFL.com.au.

The Bombers kicked off their 2014 campaign with a 39-point drubbing of North Melbourne in Dustin Fletcher's record-breaking 379th game for the club.

Dual Geelong premiership coach Mark Thompson is at the helm for the 2014 season.
