ADELAIDE'S quest to claim the first Showdown at Adelaide Oval could be boosted by the earlier-than-expected return of star midfielder Richard Douglas.

Douglas was taken to hospital by a hit to the groin in a practice match against Greater Western Sydney on March 7 and was expected to miss at least a month of football.

But he ran laps with injured forward Tom Lynch during the Crows' training session last Wednesday and will await medical clearance to take his place against Port Adelaide.

Crows coach Brenton Sanderson was cautious, however, saying Douglas would not be rushed back into the team.

"Tom Lynch (3-5 weeks away) and Douglas are up and going now and they're probably going to come back earlier than expected," Sanderson said.

"We certainly won't take any risks with those players either.

"If Douglas makes himself available he's still got to get the approval from surgeons and doctors and that sort of thing."

In further positive news for the Crows, key forward James Podsiadly has been cleared of any damage to his arm after a slight scare in the side's 38-point loss to Geelong last Thursday.
